The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA-Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives) was created in 1945 and is a public research organization with more than 16,000 researchers, engineers and other employees. Its mission is to develop know-how and assure the technological transfer in a large variety of civil and defense industrial applications such as in the areas of nuclear and renewable energies, biotechnology, environmental protection, microelectronics, optoelectronics and many others. CEA informs, advises and makes its expertise available to government authorities and industrial partners. CEA is also committed to fundamental research in diverse fields such as particle and nuclear physics, astrophysics, molecular and cellular biology, climatology, radiation-matter interaction, and condensed matter physics.

Inac develops strong activities in nano- and material characterization (synchrotron, neutrons, NMR and EPR, TEM, ions...) through internal or shared research centers and with Inac research groups located at ESRF and ILL. Inac manages, together with the FMNT (a Grenoble research federation), a 700 m2 clean room for upstream research and fast devices prototyping. Inac runs a synchrotron platform at the ESRF, comprising in particular the BM32/Interfaces CRG beamline dedicated to in situ structural investigations of nanostructures and thin films during their growth using synchrotron x-rays.

The main task of CEA/Inac within this project will be in situ structural investigations, using x-ray reflectivity and grazing –incidence x-ray scattering, of graphene during its growth by chemical vapor deposition on liquid metal surfaces, using the most intense synchrotron x-ray beamlines of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.
